Stress Chest Pains in Women

Expert AuthorStress chest pains in women can be frightening. The tightening sensation is similar to that described in heart attack. The thought that it might be heart attack can increase stress chest pains.

Stress chest pains in women may indeed be heart related, but they may be something else. Not all that is called chest pain is a result of heart disease. The part of the spinal cord that receives pain signals from the heart is near the spinal cord area that receives similar signals for chest pain. Because of this, run over in these spinal cord areas can make us believe we have heart pain when it is chest pain. It can also make us believe we have chest pain, arm, or even back pain when it is the heart.

Causes of Chest Pains in Women

It would be foolish to attempt to list every cause of chest pain in women, but the following are an example. You will want to discuss your chest pain with a qualified, licensed physician.

* Angina pectoris: Chest pains may indicate one or more blocked arteries. The blockage reduces blood flow to the heart, depriving it of oxygen and resulting in chest pain. This chest pain is pressure, often said to feel like an elephant sitting on the chest, or vise-like pain.

* Periconditis: Another heart problem that may cause chest pains is periconditis, inflammation of the heart lining.

* Other Heart Conditions: Other cardiac problems can also cause chest pains in women and men alike.

* Musculoskeletal: Chest pain may, however involve muscles and the skeleton. Chest pain of this type usually produces tenderness of the chest wall when it is touched. It may also be felt when the shoulder or arm are moved.

* Gall Bladder: Chest pain that is related to eating may be gall bladder disease.

* Acid reflux: Chest pain that is felt when the stomach is empty might be related to acid reflux, heartburn, or ulcer disease.

* Arthritis: Chest pain may also be referred pain from arthritis of the cervical spine area.

Stress Chest Pains in Women

Stress chest pains in women are not surprising when you consider the effects of stress on the body. Stress, when it is a response to negative demands made upon us, is often a “fight-or-flight” response. It brings about definite physical changes. It prepares the body to run away or fight the enemy.

When this response is activated, the brain calls for a flood of chemicals such as adrenaline, cortisol, and noradrenaline. These chemicals are released into the bloodstream, and the body undergoes a series of dramatic changes.

* You breathe faster.
* Blood is redirected from the digestive tract to muscles and limbs. This provides energy and fuel for running and fighting.
* Your pupils dilate and your eyesight sharpens.
* Your awareness intensifies, and your impulses quicken.
* Muscles contract and tighten.
* … and more

These physical changes can tighten the chest, causing chest pains. If the woman believes the chest pains indicate a serious health challenge, she may further tighten the muscles, increasing stress chest pains.

Helpful Tip

Chest pain can indicate coronary artery disease, but it can also be caused by conditions that are not related to the heart, most of which are less serious. If you have chest pains of any type, it is best to err on the side of caution. See a physician immediately and discuss your concerns.

This definately sounds like me, i recently had chest pains. They did not bother me so much until i called my doctor and told them, they freaked out and told me to go to the er, well there they told me i probably have acid reflux, which well..that makes sense to me, but i couldnt sleep that night. next day, i went for a follow up with my doctor, she sent me to hospital for ekg, chestxray and bloodwork, everything came back normal.. two days later, i went back to the doctor because my left arm was tingling, here, my back was out of place, also. needless to say i still believe it has something to do with my heart, and i am scared of dying…im 21, female, weigh about 140, active enough, and my family has no history of heart disease. oh yeah, im super paranoid about everthing. email me?

I saw a cardiologist a few months ago because my heart would race seemingly out of control day and night for no apparent reason. I was monitored over 24 hours and was told my heart is working approx 8% too hard I was given Cardicor 5mg which i take once a day. My chest is painful and sometimes feels as is someone is standing / leaning on it. I sometimes feel sort of breath, however when I excercise and my heart rate is higher I feel fine.

I’ve been experiencing some chest pains, just starting today. Me, I’m paranoid when it comes to any kind of pain I get. I’m 18, maybe 15-20 pounds heavier than I should be. My family does have history of heart problems. My pain seems to be on top of my left breast more towards my arm than my chest. I get random shooting pain there. I also experienced it between my breasts, and a little in my neck on the left side. I don’t want to blow this out of proportion, because I tend to do that with things. I shouldn’t be worried about a heart attack right? My mom and friends seem to think I’m just stressed about everything at school, with midterms coming up next week. Plus, my home life hasn’t been the greatest, and I’m constantly worried about my parents. (I really don’t want to panic anymore). What should I do?

I guess I should be honest and admit that sometimes I have the occasional cigarette, and I’m on birth control. Horrible, I know. I hope I haven’t screwed myself over.

I need to tell many of you this! I had severe chest pain that the pain level was above a 10. I spent the night in the hospital on morphine iv push every 3 hours. My DR. loves tests and I have every test known to man. ( Thank God for good health insurance). At any rate I was released from the hospital with all mt tests coming back normal. It is STRESS. I am a nursing student and a home health care provider. I should of known this but I got scared to death. We need to get rid of stress in our life because it makes us unhealthy. Now if I could, I would, however, being a nursing student is big time stressful. So please do not make yourself more anxious thinking your having a heart attack because from what Ive read most of you have the same symptoms as I do. Stress take a load off and relax as much as possible. Yes I know easier said than done.

i have a history of panic disorder & attacks. so i know all about those & have had chest pain once in a while with them. i also have scoliosis, so my posture puts me out of whack quite a bit. BUT… my husband had a heart attack in august, followed by a triple bypass ( he’s only 50!) and ever since then i have been a wreck. i have chest pain off and on. it is in my breast bone and across the top of my chest-above my breasts & down into my left breast/arm pit area…i won’t have it for days/weeks & then it can come for a few days ( i did a big hike yesterday and it started to ache-very scary) of course it sets off a panic attack & hypochondria of sorts. i went to a dr. about it. had an EKG last month and it was fine. my BP was 130/70 and i am trying to get that down as it is high for me ( but i was a nervous wreck @ the office!)
i get back pain as well that comes & goes. i just feel so scared all the time that it could be my heart. my husband says it is all in my head. i had not had the chest pain for 2 weeks and now it is back? any clues?

Lately, I’ve noticed an almost burning pain in the area where my ribs separate, underneath my breasts, right in the middle of my chest, below my sternum. It usually only happens when I get really upset about something, but the pain lasts for about 5-10 minutes. I’ve also noticed that once the pain subsides a bit, it feels like it jumps up into the back of my throat. Does anyone have any idea what this might be?? It’s starting to worry me, but I’m not sure if I should see a doctor about it, yet.

  8. Frank says:

My girlfriend has been experiencing chest pain for about a month now consistently with no reltaion to physical activity. The pain is enough to keep her awake at night and sometimes makes her cry. The doctor she saw said she should take Motrin and that she would be fine, shes not. The x-ray didnt show anything and she is still waking up at night with excrutiating pains. Is there someone answering question son this page or is it just us helping eachother?

    Hi,
I’ve been very, very stressed lately, and – besides anxiety attacks, I’ve started having bad chest pains in the centre of my chest/ breastbone. I also have real tension in my throat/ lower jaw. I feel like I’ve swallowed a brick!. I assume it’s stress related as I had an ECG fairly recently (for other reasons) and it didn’t show anything untoward. I’d love to be able to get rid of the pain though!

  11. Jackie says:

Can i ask what happened I am 31 years old and am having the same thing. All of my tests came back just fine however the pain is still there. Did they find anything out re your pain?

  12. Kira says:

I am 64, 169cm. 77kg. no smoking drinking or drugs problems. I have stress situations for las 9 years (no medication yet). Lately I started having a little pain in “upper heart” area, similar to “needdle” pulsations (as if there is a small needle inside of heart) and it hurts similar to heart beating. It comes and goes: 2-3 times a day 7-10 min. each. What shoul I do?

  13. ann says:

did they do a ultrasound or catscan…not to scare u..i also had the burning in the back same place` as yours…turned out to be pacreatic cancer..i survived..that was 2 years ago

  14. kim says:

I am having pain in the center of my chest,at the lower part of my breasts where my bra sits. I just went to the doc and had a teadmill test. It was normal. She did not know what it was. This has happened many times before. She was not very nice because I was pushing for an answer. I told her that I am tired of feeling like crap. She has misdiagnosed me severel times. She said that I might be bipolar but I pushed to go to an endocrinologist and ended up having thyroid disease–Hashimoto’s. Upon researching Hashimoto’s, women are often misagnosed as depressed or bipolar. So frustrating! I have shoulder pain and can’t sit on a hard surface for any amount of time because it hurts my tailbone. I try not to take any kind of simulant, including soda and medications, because I am hypersensitive. This can casue chest pain. Some of you may want to journal what you eat/drink, your activities, and when the pain comes. Any advice or suggestions are welcomed.

  15. Lydia says:

It’s been three long days since I started to have this persistent pain in the upper center of my chest and between the breasts. The pain just centers in that area and seems more severe if I expand my chest or move about too much. My weight and breathing are not problems.
I thought the pain would go away after a few minutes when I first had it days ago like it did before–once in a while I’d have it, but it went away soon, and it didn’t occur often. But this time it seems very different, the pain is more severe and it’s been there every minute for so long.
I am getting scared. I know I should go to see a doctor, but I don’t have medical insurance. I know if I go to see a doctor, I’ll pay thousands of dollars for all sorts of tests, so last night I went to look up for any information online and found this site. I just hope anyone who has the similar kind of pain can share any information or give advice. I suspect stress can be part of the reason for I do have two very difficult teenage boys. Many thanks in advance.

  16. herra says:

i have been feeling that too. i also am age 26.
it seems to be in the middle of my chest, near my left breast but above it. it feels sharp when i make sudden movements and i’m starting to get paranoid and scared.
it just started a couple of days ago. if anyone can offer any insight, i too would appreciate it! thank you

  17. Sherry says:

Thank you for the site. I just noticed the pain in my chest four days ago. One thing I noticed is that my pain does not happen in the morning until I get on my computer. I lean over it. And I just told my son that as well. I do have a doctors appointment in 12 days. So I will bring that up.

  18. Sherry says:

I can tell you I have had alot of stress, most recently my boyfriend broke up with me and we were together for 11 years. That happened in July. I can’t get that out of my head to save my life. I started a diet and so far i have lost 40 lbs. however it is the low carb diet. I have started to lose my hair, now I know people shed hair, but this is getting crazy! And now I am having this chest pain. I worry over everthing, so of course I think this could be a heart attack as well. Maybe it is all stress. But i’m going to get it checked out.

  19. One symptom for panic attack is chest pain but I hope it would not go there its too far.

Anyways some reviews of panic attack shows that its only mind over matter(mild case). When you are in good health surely you can handle with it, but for someone having panic attacks since birth I thought the treatment should be specific at different case.

Hi, I’m 26yrs old and have been experiencing problems with my chest since about May this year, started after I had a bad reaction to some tablets I tried for migraines. Chest pain has got worse as time goes by, I get a sharp pain in left side of my chest just under my breast and it also feels like i’m constantly short of breath and like I have a massive weight pushing down on my chest. Have had e.c.g done twice, 2nd time I had to have it done 4 times as wouldnt settle, had pulse of 126. Am currently taking some tablets to reduce amount of acid in my stomach incase its gerd but they dont seem to help. Also feel exhausted constantly & have trouble sleeping as its feels like i keep stop breathing and miss a breath. Am getting really down about it now so if anyone has any ideas, my boyfriend thinks it’s stress as I have had several panic attacks but Im sceptical as the uncomfortableness is almost constant (oh and I seem to be burping all the time & feel a little relief afterwards)

Hi, I’m 19 yrs old and have been experiencing chest pains for about 2 years already. I went to my doctors and had an ecg done and the results came back as normal. They assumed it was stress. I admit stress hits all of us, but then I started having back pains as well. My chest pains would suddenly occur and only last for a few seconds but then would appear again a minute later. It doesn’t happen every day. But it does happen once-twice a week. My back pains are only in two specific areas; the upper left and the left middle. I am very worried. My mom is a nurse and she says its stress, so do all of her coworkers, but is it really? When i exercise, I have a shortness of breath but I assumed that was normal for me as well because I was being active. Another thing is that when i swallow food, it feels so terrible in my chest. It feels as if the food is absolutely stuck and i get scared but goes away after. Can anyone help me please?

  26. Ashley says:

I have been having some chest pains in the middle as well as left and right side, currently on the right side as i type actually, this pain isn’t unbearable but very noticeable, as well as left, and right arm pain. this pain is an unusual pain as i haven’t had it my whole life..At first i thought maybe it was anxiety or a panic attack, but ive noticed ive become very dizzy when it happens, very tired, but not enough to cause me to pass out. also my heart rate skips beats, speeds, and slows down..which is what caused me to believe anxiety, but since i have a pretty good hang on when and what a panic attack feels like, and since its happened so often im not exactly sure what to do..also, my feet get really cold with this happens…*sigh* im planning on going to the dr, but since im 22 years old, and i didn’t go back to college this semester, i do not have health insurance, so some sort of guidance would be nice…i recently went to the hospital for blacking out…heh, of course they did blood work ekg ect claimed to find nothing, when i came home, i looked over my blood work, noticed my cell count was pretty off..hmm im pretty scared, would just be nice to know weather i should seek emergency help or if i most likely will be fine till my insurance kicks back in…= ) thanks….

  28. tamara says:

I get chest pains when I’m under a significant amount of stress for an extended period of time. It’s only on the left side of my chest, just behind my breast, definitely a tightening sensation, and sometimes I’ll get a “jolt” of pain down my left arm during the pain. I’ve gone to the ER for it three or four times over the past 5 years and they always act like I’m crazy for being there. I’ve had all the tests done and they always show that I’m perfectly healthy. Every time it happens it’s extremely scary though!

  29. Ali says:

I am 18 years old and overweight. i’ve been having chest pain for about three weeks now. at first i had pain on my right side near the bottom of my ribs, under both breasts, in my collar bone, between and under my shoulder blades, and a little in my left forearm and wrist. i went to the ER about a week after it started and got blood tests, pee tests, an EKG, and chest x-rays and the doctors said that it was chest wall pain, which is muscular and gave me pain medication and told me to rest. (i did notice that when they had me hooked up to the heart monitor that my heart rate was a little low, around 76) well i did that and eventually it did ease up but now about a week after the pain went away, its back but it’s a little different. i’m having sharp pain under my right breast, and along the top of my left breast. its also in my right breast now and in my upper back. i did put a big entertainment center together yesterday with my boyfriend so it might be from that. my mom also thinks it might be from stress and anxiety. i have depression and anxiety which i’m not being treated for right now and we are living with my emotionally and verbally abusive father until we are able to get our own place. when i get the pain i do panic and its hard for me to calm down. but until i know whats going on or the pain goes away, i can’t make myself completely calm, you know? i’m going to call the doctor to schedule more tests and check my heart but right now i’m freaking out. i don’t know what to do.

hi,i also had back and chest pains about 7/8 years ago for no apparent reason at 6am in morning i had 3 spells of them within a week, went to doctors and was told they were muscle spasems and cramps with stress could of bort them on!!up until now jan 2010 i hadn`t had one..but on sunday 17th jan 2010 it came on which woke me while i was sleeping,it started with dull pains in my upper back level with my ribs,it then slowley spread to my chest making it hard to breath.the pain was unbearable,it was like squeezing and burning sensation it lasted about 1 hour it that intense i had to take my husbands strong tablets called tramadol but even they took half hour to work!every time i seemed to move it got more intence,it finally stopped after an hour.but the following night it came back again!!!for another hour i just feel so tired as didnt get much sleep..i`m just wondering if anyone else has had this as i don`t really think it is due all to stress,if it happens again soon i`m going to see a doctor as i just can`t take this again…thanks for listening

Accecpt it,(panic attack) float with it, let time pass.

    Hi Kim,

It was great to read what you wrote! I have been having the same kind of chest pain and been told they can’t find a reason for it. But what caught me even more was your complain about tailbone pain. I have also been dealing with that too and really didn’t know what to think of it! I have a multinodular goiter and have just been referred to an Endo dr. I was told I have hypothyroid, but have lost almost 40 pounds since August 09. I am overly tired and almost always sick to stomach. Constipation is also a problem. My throat is constantly bothering me too. Feels like it is swollen, or something is always stuck in there. I am wondering if Hashimoto’s is a possibility, but it doesn’t explain the huge weight loss. Any ideas?

I also have panic attacks You know we as people always try to diagnois ourselves, we dont like going to the doctor.

They run test and all things, and said nothing wrong with my heart. I never drink or smoke and the chance to have problem very little.

But I still have this chest pain and just don’t know what it is.

Feel heavy on my chest, run up onto my neck, my left arm. I also had lot of back pain. This pain can go on and off all day, up and down.

I’ve had alot of stress over years, and always dealt with it on it’s own. but after dealing with my boyfriend who has brain trauma injury and his severly adhd teenager, and the inability to even watch tv and chill out,, during this recent breakup a few weeks ago, everytime i heard his car pullup my heart went mad, racing so so hard, not able to breath well, then it would calm down due to not know what was going to happen, and ever since the past two weeks, the sharp pain starts whenever, doesnt get better changing positions, and they started me on on 2 anxiety meds, but it has not helped the pain at all, nor the length of time it occurs, so I’m going to see dr tuesday, this is not normal for me, and I’ve dealt with much worse in life than relationship issues. so we’ll see what happens!!!

good luck to all of you,

the discomfort will hopefully leave us..

  39. Betsy says:

To Emy, My whole life I have had panic attacks like yours. I am now 38, but when growing up I was always embarrassed about the whole situation. I would bunch up in a ball and totally lose control of myself. I couldn’t breath and it was like an out of body experience that made me feel like I would rather be dead. I still have them to this day, but more under control. They told me for years that it was vertigo. I, finally, went to a doctor when I got out of college, because I couldn’t handle the humiliation of the attacks anymore. They put me on prozac. I am now on Wellbutrin and lexipro, because Prozac stopped working. Alot of it is talking myself through the different scenarios and one trick that helps me is to tilt my head back during them. Sounds strange, but it works for some reason. Unfortunately, i believe I have passed this horrible thing on to my daughter. I can see the fear in her eyes when it happens. It makes me so sad.

The reason I even was looking on this site though, is because I have been having chest pains, and have had headaches for over a month now (I don’t ever have headaches) and am trying to reassure myself that it is just me having too much stress in my life. Good luck to you:) Breath

I have been Having chest pains since I was around 17, I am now 25. I have had doctors tell me its stress its panic attacks its angina its nothing. i had them while I was pregnant and did some tests i probably shouldn’t have done but I was worried. Turns out im ok???.. I have done the ekg the echocardiogram stress test and all that jazz. Lately I have been having pain more frequently and I have been trying to think nothing of it because of the past results of the testing, but it is starting to affect my day to day life with my daughter. When I lift her a lot I get pains and chest pressure so I get scared to lift and play with her. Its starting to really get irritated with this. Maybe try getting gallbladder checked, liver, kidneys.Change your diet, really change it,go for healthy.
muscle relaxers and morin are just covering the real problem whether it be minor or major. try keeping a food diary, and a blood pressure diary for two weeks to a month before going back to doctor, oh and by the way if your doctor is not listening, find another one. You are in charge of your own health….Goodluck!

My dr keep telling me that i need to have my breast smaller if not I will have more problems when I get older. Now in the last copule of days my chest has been hurting im so scared cause to me i feel like it may be a heart attack. I don’t want to go to the er cause im afraid thats what they are gonna tell me. But the pain has been at the left side right on the top of my breast. I don’t know what to do cause i have a family and I don’t like to get bad news. But when i go to take a deep breath it hurts sometimes i will have to hold the left side of my chest just to breath..Im just scared..

I’ve been having chest pains for over a month now. Sometimes in the middle of my chest or on the right but mainly on the left side. It tends to be late at the night and early morning when it’s at its worst but they do occur during the day and on occasion have stopped me in my tracks. It’s a dull pain that sometimes if fairly tightening on my chest. I’m young, active and have never suffered from pains like this before. I’m concerned and would like some advice as to what could be causing this and prevention to it

I am a young high school student, but I have been getting chest pain since I was 13-14. My mom ended up calling 911, and I had to stay in the hospital for about 3 days. The doctors all thought it was different things, but I don’t know what to believe now. Still, to this day (litterally, my chest started hurting about 30 minutes ago), I get severe chest pain, and I really don’t want to deal with the nervousness and the thoughts of my chest pain coming back. I don’t want to live my life in fear, knowing that my chest will hurt at some random point.
I am usually the kind of person who takes everything into stride, and I usually don’t worry about things like this, but for the past 2 weeks (after 7 months of no pain, and not really a change in habits or scedule) I have been getting chest pain and (even though these are very unintentional) I have been getting the worst anxiety/stress attacks that I have ever experienced. I don’t know whether it’s because of school, or worrying about family members who are also ill, but I would really love some help.
    Could anyone help me please?

Hello I am 17 years old and I have been getting these really bad chest pains in my chest. It started about a month ago and it has been coming and going (currently I am experiencing it), I thought it was simply anxiety pains, but I have absolutely nothing to worry about, in fact, im quite relaxed. I am getting worried. I am 6’7 and weight 120 lbs. Could it be heart problems? or anything else?
